Services: Residential Care - Four cottages (Level II group homes and emergency shelter) that serve up to 28 abused, abandoned, neglected, and/or delinquent children ages birth to 21 from across North Carolina. Children learn structure, responsibility, and other skills to help make them productive citizens. They attend public school, local churches, and are involved in the community doing a variety of volunteer work. They also experience educational and cultural activities. Teaching Parents provide direct care to our children in each cottage. This program follows the Teaching Family Model of Appalachian Family Innovations (AFI). Children are referred from the Department of Social Services, Department of Juvenile Justice, and area Mental Health agencies. The program serves all 100 North Carolina Counties.
Families at Home - Includes three programs. Family Reunification Counseling provides services to children who stay in our residential care homes. Licensed Professional Counselors on staff identify specific issues that the child and their family are dealing with and try to successfully reunite the family. Time Limited Family Reunification works to successfully reunite children and families that have been separated. A Family Specialist provides in-home support to referred families for four to six months. Referrals are made from the Department of Social Services and the Department of Juvenile Justice. The program serves Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin Counties.
High Country First in Families - Provides support for families with members who are developmentally disabled or have suffered traumatic brain injury. The goal of the program is to provide people with disabilities and their families with the resources and support necessary for them to live and work successfully in their communities. Referrals are self-made. The program serves Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Watauga, and Wilkes Counties.
Foster Care - Includes three aspects. Therapeutic Foster Care provides a home where a child with serious emotional disturbances lives with highly trained foster parents who have access to other support services. Family Foster Care is a temporary home where a child unable to live with their parents lives with trained foster parents with access to other support services. Adoptions are our foster families choosing to permanently care for their foster child. The program serves Northwestern North Carolina Counties.
Day Treatment - Focuses on teaching children who have school behavioral problems and those who have been suspended or expelled. This includes special education, counseling, parent training, vocational training, skill building, crisis intervention, and recreational therapy. Referrals are made through the school systems, area Mental Health agencies, and the Department of Juvenile Justice. The program serves Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes Counties.
Counseling - Licensed mental health professionals provide individualized therapy that is solution-focused, time-limited and recovery oriented. Traditional psychotherapy is available when appropriate and is cognitive/behavioral in nature. This program serves Northwestern North Carolina Counties.
Assessment Care - A comprehensive professional review of a child’s and family’s needs that is done when they first seek services from a caregiver. The assessment of a child includes a review of physical and mental health, intelligence, school performance, family situation, and behavior in the community. Referrals are made by the Department of Social Services, Department of Juvenile Justice, and area Mental Health agencies. The program serves all 100 North Carolina Counties.
